Day 16
NOTHING PLANNED FOR TODAY!!! There is an optional tour to the Pearl Market but since we've went to one in Beijing we're passing.
The hotel here is right on the Pearl River and the main restaurant overlooks the river. Each morning at breakfast a couple of guys go swimming by. This would be the equivalent of swimming in the Mississippi with all the pollution and barge traffic going by - it's hard to believe that this is good for your health. They stay close to shore out of the barge traffic and some of these guys have a piece of styrofoam tied to themselves so that the barges can see them - so it's all good...
This morning we went on a walk down the river (we didn't see Chris Farley in his van but it would not have surprised me). You see all kinds of activities going on in the parks. We saw groups of hackey-sackers (they use a hackey sack that has badminton feathers on it), we saw ballroom dancers, tai shi groups, sword twirlers, baton twirlers, and even a choir group. We also saw some of the swimmers getting in and out of the water. I was happy to see them spitting and blowing their noses (using the old Texas hankey if you know what I mean) and even soaping up after getting out. Now I know it's all good...
At noon we got the call from Jocelyn telling us that Callan's Visa has been approved. Yeah! Now we're set. One more day... I'm starting to pack today if I can.
Right in front of the hotel the street is lined with street vendors. They try to start conversations with you by telling you your baby is cute, asking where you are from, asking how old the baby is, etc, etc, etc... Anyway today while I was out I spotted Mao's "Little Red Book" and started haggling with the girl. Keep in mind that she was only asking $5 but at this point I'm not in it for the money - I'm just killing time. I noticed a Mao wristwatch and a Mao alarm clock and the haggling really started - she wanted $15.50 ($125 Chinese RMB) for all three and I offered her $11.25 ($90 Chinese RMB). She got mad when I told her that I bought Mao watches in Beijing for $10 RMB and told me that she buys them for $25 RMB, so bring mine to her and she would buy them for $30 RMB. She came down to $100 RMB when I told her I would have to check with my wife :) Then as I was walking away (for the second time) she came down to $95. I now said $80 and she told me to leave :) I wish I could!
This is gym class for a local school. All the kids are doing 'windmills' with their arms. Right after that they had to run a few laps around the park.

Our hotel is situated by a couple of wedding photography shops, so each day we would see several couples getting wedding photos.
