Day 13
Today's a big day. It's "bags in the hallway" at 10:30 and then off to the airport around 11:45 to catch a 2 pm flight for Guangzhou. This will be a first flight for us as a family so it will be interesting. I'm still packing.... post pics later when we get to Guangzhou. We will be staying at the White Swan, which I hear is quite nice, but how it could be nicer than the Dolton here in Changsha is hard to believe.
Later -
Well we made it to Guangzhou all in one piece. The flight went pretty well, Callan didn't have any problems and played most of the way, so that bodes well for the 13-hour flight home. Going through immigration and security in Changsha was a little unnerving since it was the first time we were using Callan's new passport, but we all made it. Ellen was a trooper to the end, she checked us all in as a group and negotiated the luggage restrictions so that only a few of us had to pay overweight charges.
Once we got in to Guangzhou we found Jason and Jocylen waiting for us. At this point we're like a bunch of kids - we go from guide to guide for what to do next. Jason took care of us and got us onto the bus and on to the White Swan with no trouble.
After checking into the hotel - which is nice but not as nice as the Dolton - we went out to eat (it's about 6:30 pm by now) and we went into a local Thai resaurant. In the entryway was all sorts of live critters you could eat - silkworms, baby pigeons, turtles, snakes, fish, etc... They say in this part of China the people are famous for eating just about anything and I believe it. The tray of silkworms look like a big rolling mass of maggots, yumm.
As soon as we sat down to eat they poured us some hot tea and 2 seconds later a fly landed right in Chris' and died instantly. She didn't see it until after the fact and at first thought it was part of the local diet :)
This town reminds me a lot of Hong Kong - the hotel is on the riverfront - the Pearl River - and the skyline is lit up at night with laser shows and cruise boats going up and down the river.
Later we had THE WORST NIGHT EVER as Callan woke up at midnight and cried until 3 am. Apparently it was a mixture of gas and a new crib, which was much smaller and with bumpers in it. We finally got her to sleep with Chris after I pushed the bed against the wall. We were to the point of calling the Jason and/or Alex the doctor in our group when she finally went to sleep.
This is were we started the day at the Dolton Hotel in Changsha.

We're all in the lobby and ready to go around 11 am.

The Grand Entrance.
Auntie Ellen, Chris, Ken, and Callan.

One last group shot in the lobby of the Dolton Hotel in Changsha.

Getting the heck out of the Guangzhou airport. It's actually a very modern airport. We got out in no time.
