Callan - For this child I prayed

This is our somewhat-daily attempt to keep family and friends (our pets don't have internet access) informed during our trip to China to get our daughter Callan.

Day 11

Last night was a rough one. We thought we had Callan primed to hit the sack at 8:30 but she wouldn't go to sleep until 9:30 and then she woke up at 12:30 and stayed awake until about 2 am and then woke up at 5:30. She had gotten off her schedule during the day so that probably did it.

Today was much better. We all went to the Riverside Park this morning and Wal-Mart this afternoon. We were all the center of attention at both places. Ellen, our CCAI rep here in China, made us all a card explaining in Chinese that we are adopting the baby girl, love her very much, and taking her back to the U.S. When the people gather around to see the girls, we just show them this card and the people are very friendly and happy for us and the girls.

Callan had a couple of breakthroughs today. First she allowed Chris to put her on the floor to play by herself. Up to this point she almost always had to be held - even when playing. Then she started to crawl for the first time today. In the orphanage they spend a lot of time in walkers, so she has very strong legs and likes to bounce but she doesn't know how to go from a sitting position to a crawling position. Today she did this a couple of times to get to her new toys. Plus she rode in a stroller for the first time today - she loved it.

Tomorrow we're off to the silk factory. We managed to get Callan to sleep on time tonight (ancient Chinese secret). I'm doing the same :)

Here's some pictures from the Xiang Riverside park:

Callan loved the stroller - we had to pad it out with one of our sweaters.

She's a rubbernecker. Notice the stone carvings in the wall - this stretched on for at least a quarter-mile that I saw.

Here's where we started the walk. This is a museum to important people from Hunan but I think it's mainly artists and poets - which is a totally different thing.

There was a group of musicians playing.

There were a few fisherman out on the river.

And quite a few on the bank.

This lady was practicing Tai Chi (?). There were several people doing this or some other form of exercise along the way.

This was a koi pond.

One of the floors of the museum is dedicated to driftwood carvings.
